This year at the Chicago Auto Show, Subaru unveiled a series of limited edition models to celebrate their 50 years in the US market. Every model currently on sale will get the treatment; a breakdown of features and production numbers can be found
!!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!!
.
The overall package is quite nice, and Heritage Blue works well on these cars (
OK, maybe not as well on the WRX/STI and BRZ
). However, while checking out the cars at the show, I noticed some interesting details.
Please excuse a few of the slightly blurry photos below:
On the STI, the paint on the firewall looks a bit dark, kinda like WR Blue.
OK... That’s Venetian Red under the hood of the Forester XT.
In fact, all of the cars on display were repainted to Heritage Blue. Well, except for the BRZ (
I’m pretty sure
,
or it was exceptionally well done
), but it had its own little secret...
For those unaware, Color Code D4S is Crystal Black Silica Pearl. Interestingly, this BRZ had a production date of 08/17.
The Crosstrek was also a bit special...
This was the VIN.
Someone forgot to uncover one of the B pillar tags on the 5 door Impreza.
The 5 door Impreza has a build date of 09/16.
I’m guessing this is likely something like the !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! we heard about a few years ago. Likely, these applications of Heritage Blue were prepped a bit differently to shine more on the show floor. Or maybe it’s something different entirely. Either way, they were all repainted quite well ( door jambs, etc, though I didn’t look under the cargo floors ), and featured every detail that the real 50th Anniversary cars will have. Normally, this kind of thing wouldn’t be noticeable, as the cars would typically be locked to the general public.
Anyway, I look forward to seeing the real things out on the road.

Interesting, seems like they just grabbed a few cars off the line, shot them in the new color, and gave them the ‘special’ parts. Makes sense if they haven’t started production of the special editions yet, but still kind of odd that they didn’t at least pick them out before paint.

This is actually pretty common — surprisingly so, actually. Cars will be shot/ sprayed days before a show, or existing “display properties” updated to be MY correct or showcase new features. Kinda takes the magic out of everything.

I love this color combo. The hot pink and lime green looks so good against the blue!

The stranger thing is that they didn’t just grab them off the line, at least most of them. It’s like they grabbed what ever they had sitting on back lots that could work.
The Impreza is a 2017, built in 2016 as one of the earliest of that generation (so, built about 1 1/2 years ago). The Crosstrek is a prototype (probably a late build test), and doesn’t even have a valid salable VIN.
The US built cars are already showing up on dealer lots, and the Japan built cars should be following within the next month or so. It’s almost like they used these cars to test how the new package looked put together.

Especially with the red STI fender badge!

It’s the normal hot pink STI, my camera just made it red.

A bit slap dash really.

Huh, it looked red to me in person. Also in this press photo. I could be wrong though; I’ll have to take a closer look next time I see one.

Heritage Blue Metallic looks a lot like Steel Blue Metallic.

They do, but supposedly they are different colors. As I understand it, the Heritage Blue paint code is P9Y (
I had to dig online, as the cars at the show were of no help!
), while the Blue Steel Grey paint code is K5X.
I think Heritage Blue is a bit darker, but I’ve never seen Blue Steel Grey in person (
we don’t get it here, which is a shame, as I think it’s a nice color
).

I thought maybe it was one of those times where they change the name for the same colour in different markets.
Like Skoda and Petrol Blue Metallic in the U.K. and Lava Blue Metallic in European markets.

Is there any word on a new engine for the STI or a wagon/hatch coming back?

Nothing official, but one of the associates on the show floor did mention that the FA24F was going to be the basis for the next STI engine. Again, its not official, but it does make sense.

Subaru has been known to do that with colors in the past, though it seems not so much any more.
Part of that may be that they seemed to stop naming colors in ways that were not entirely world market friendly, if you know what I mean. Such as, Cashmere Yellow vs Blaze Yellow...
